    HostAfrica, a South African web hosting provider, is aggressively expanding its footprint in West Africa, with a series of acquisitions cementing its position in the rapidly growing Nigerian market. The company’s latest move, the purchase of GO54 (formerly WhoGoHost), underscores its ambition to dominate the region’s digital infrastructure.

    This acquisition, announced earlier this week, sees HostAfrica absorb GO54’s operations and its substantial customer base of over 100,000 users. Michael Osterloh, HostAfrica’s chief executive, described the deal as a “strategic step” towards continental leadership. “This acquisition strengthens our position as the leading provider of web hosting and related services in Africa,” he stated. Opeyemi Awoyemi, GO54’s founder, confirmed the sale and his subsequent resignation from the board via social media.

    GO54, founded in 2007, has become a prominent name in Nigerian web hosting, offering a range of services from cloud and reseller hosting to website security and design. Its acquisition provides HostAfrica with a significant boost in a market ripe with potential.

    This is not HostAfrica’s first foray into Nigeria. Just last October, it acquired webmanager.ng, a NiRA-accredited hosting provider. Kizito Ibeh, webmanager.ng’s founder and chief executive, expressed optimism about the merger, citing access to “more advanced hosting solutions and resources” for his customers. Mr. Osterloh emphasized the strategic importance of Nigeria, highlighting the company’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions to meet the region’s “rising demand.”

    Nigeria’s web hosting market is projected to experience significant growth in 2024, driven by increasing internet penetration and the boom in e-commerce. HostAfrica’s acquisitions, including the earlier purchases of Naijawebhost in June 2023 and DomainKing in 2021, reflect a calculated strategy to capitalize on this expansion. Mr. Osterloh emphasized the company’s commitment to seamless service transitions for acquired companies, ensuring consistent quality for customers.

    HostAfrica’s aggressive expansion is part of a broader trend in the African web hosting market. While global giants like GoDaddy, Google Cloud, and Amazon Web Services dominate internationally, local players are gaining traction by focusing on regional needs and personalized support. In Nigeria, competitors like GigaLayer, which recently merged with Russian-owned HUB8, and HoganHost, which is pursuing its own acquisition strategy, are also vying for market share.

    Despite this competition, HostAfrica remains confident. “What started as a small hosting company is steadily becoming a force in Africa,” Mr. Osterloh commented. The company’s vision extends beyond simply providing hosting services; it aims to “uplift the continent’s digital landscape” by making world-class hosting accessible.

    The African web hosting market is expected to reach $2.62 billion in revenue by 2024, according to Statista. HostAfrica’s focus on local expertise and minimal disruption during acquisitions has allowed it to build trust and cater to a wide range of customers, from small businesses to large enterprises. As Nigeria’s digital economy continues its rapid growth, HostAfrica appears well-positioned to continue its expansion and solidify its leadership in the region. Its continued acquisition strategy suggests that the company is not only riding the wave of digital growth but actively shaping it.
