Visa has announced the return of its accelerator programme for fintech startups in Africa, offering a potential lifeline to early-stage companies navigating a more challenging funding environment. The three-month initiative, scheduled for 2025, aims to support the development of innovative payment solutions and bolster financial inclusion across the continent.

The Visa Accelerator Program is open to startups from seed to Series A funding stages with market-ready products addressing critical needs in payments and financial technology. To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate a functioning minimum viable product (MVP), a track record of success in their respective markets, and either operate in Africa or have concrete plans for expansion into the region.

The programme offers participating startups access to Visa’s technology, mentorship from industry experts, and connections within its global network. The focus areas include developing new payment methods, expanding access to financial services for underserved populations, and building robust payment infrastructure.

The relaunch of the accelerator comes as venture capital funding for African start-ups has seen a slowdown after a period of rapid growth. According to recent data from Africa: The Big Deal, funding for African tech startups in 2024 was significantly lower than the record highs of the previous two years. This shift has placed greater emphasis on sustainable business models and strategic partnerships, making programmes like Visa’s potentially more attractive to early-stage ventures.

While the accelerator offers valuable resources and potential exposure, its impact will ultimately depend on the ability of participating startups to translate the support into tangible business growth. The programme also raises questions about the balance between fostering local innovation and promoting Visa’s own technology and network.

Applications for the 2025 Visa Accelerator Program for fintech startups in Africa are open until March 15, 2025. Further details on the application process and specific programme criteria can be found on Visa’s website. The company has not disclosed the exact number of start-ups it intends to select for the programme.
