In a significant move to drive innovation in the construction technology sector, Flat6Labs, in partnership with SIAC Ventures and Dar Ventures, has launched the Makers — Contech Entrepreneurship Innovation Program, the first of its kind in the MENA region. This initiative, targeting startups in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, aims to empower early-stage companies offering advanced technological solutions for the construction industry.

With the construction sector facing persistent challenges such as labor shortages, safety concerns, and the demand for enhanced project management efficiency, the Makers program seeks to bridge these gaps by supporting emerging technologies. These include artificial intelligence, machine learning, drones, robotics, augmented reality, and wearable tech, which have the potential to revolutionize construction processes. The program offers up to $100,000 in funding to help startups scale their solutions, in addition to a range of support services and expert mentorship.

Backed by SIAC Ventures and Dar Ventures — two major players in the construction and infrastructure sectors — the Makers program provides startups with unparalleled access to real-world pilot projects, allowing participants to test and refine their solutions within active construction environments. Startups will have the opportunity to collaborate directly with SIAC and Dar-Al-Handasah, with the potential to integrate their technologies into the companies’ ongoing projects.

In addition to funding, the program provides startups with business training, industry mentorship, one-on-one consultations, and networking opportunities. Access to leading construction experts, both from SIAC and Dar Ventures, is seen as a major benefit, giving participants insights into the complex dynamics of large-scale construction projects.

The construction sector in the MENA region is experiencing rapid growth, with mega-projects in infrastructure, real estate, and urban development. However, this expansion has also highlighted inefficiencies and risks, including rising labor costs and safety issues.

The Makers program focuses on addressing these key challenges by encouraging innovation in several specific areas:

    • Collaboration and Efficiency: Startups developing software, mobile applications, and offsite construction solutions will be prioritized.
    • Labor Shortages: Technologies such as drones, autonomous heavy equipment, and robotics are particularly appealing to address workforce gaps.
    • Safety: The program supports the use of augmented reality, wearables, and site sensors to enhance on-site safety and training.

Flat6Labs also highlights the program’s emphasis on building information modeling (BIM) and mobile technology as tools to improve collaboration and communication within construction teams, ultimately driving project efficiency.

    A Rigorous Selection Process

The program’s selection process is designed to identify the most promising startups in the sector. Teams of 2–3 members are encouraged to apply, with preference given to startups offering tangible solutions in software, AI, robotics, or safety tech.

Once selected, the two-month pre-accelerator program will guide participants through a comprehensive cycle of business model development, prototyping, and customer acquisition. During this period, startups will have full access to the program’s extensive network of mentors, consultants, and experts from the local and international construction tech ecosystem.

    Program Timeline and Application

The Makers — Contech Entrepreneurship Innovation Program is set to kick off in November 2024 and will run until February 2025. Applications are open until September 23, 2024, with interviews to follow shortly after the deadline.

Startups selected for the program will begin working intensively on developing their business models, with access to pilot projects, mentorship, and coaching designed to fast-track their growth. The ultimate goal is to identify technologies that can be seamlessly integrated into SIAC and Dar-Al-Handasah’s projects, offering startups the potential for long-term commercial partnerships.

The launch of the Makers program underscores the growing importance of innovation in the construction sector, particularly in the MENA region, where large-scale projects require cutting-edge solutions to overcome pressing challenges. For startups focused on addressing these needs, the program offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with industry leaders and access critical funding to accelerate their growth.
