Airnergize Capital, the clean technology investment platform of South Africa’s New GX Capital, has reached a final close of R3.89bn ($239.7m) for its debut fund, backed by a syndicate of state development funding and major commercial banking balance sheets.

The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) served as the lead development finance institution (DFI), committing R240m ($14.78 million US Dollars (USD) to Fund I following an institutional due diligence process evaluating the platform’s governance framework and investment strategy.

The investor group combines South Africa’s major commercial balance sheets — including RMB Ventures, Standard Bank, Nedbank, and parent entity New GX Capital — with state development capital. Airnergize Capital operates as a black-owned and controlled fund manager, targeting commercial returns alongside environmental and social metrics across energy, water, and gas assets in Southern and broader Africa.

    Blended capital strategy

The transaction highlights a growing reliance on blended finance structures to address Southern Africa’s infrastructure gap, using public DFI capital to de-risk investment and crowd in commercial institutional liquidity.

“DBSA’s mandate is to mobilise capital toward infrastructure that supports inclusive growth, and a platform like Airnergize does that at scale rather than one transaction at a time,” said Mahlatsi Molokomme, Principal Investment Officer at the DBSA. “Backing a fund alongside commercial investors allows us to crowd in private capital rather than compete with it, which is exactly the kind of blended approach South Africa needs if it is going to close its infrastructure investment gap.”

Initial capital deployment is focused on commercial and industrial (C&I) solar photovoltaic and energy storage assets operating in South Africa, broader sub-Saharan Africa, and the Indian Ocean islands. The platform’s strategic pipeline extends to utility-scale generation, transmission infrastructure, water utilities, and gas distribution networks.

    Grid expansion and asset focus

The fund close comes amid ongoing policy efforts to expand Southern Africa’s regional energy grid and integrate private sector capital into utility assets. Airnergize Capital is participating as an investor in the Pulse Infrastructure consortium, one of seven groups pre-qualified under South Africa’s Independent Transmission Projects programme, a public-private framework aimed at expanding high-voltage power lines across the country.

“Getting to R3.89bn, with this calibre of investor around the table, tells you the market believes in what we are building,” said Khudusela Pitje, Group Chief Executive of New GX Capital. “Each investor, including the DBSA, has added something different: balance sheet strength, sector expertise, a development mandate. We have built a platform that can turn this capital into operating infrastructure that moves the needle across energy, water and gas.”

Airnergize Capital acts purely as an asset owner and fund manager rather than an engineering or operations contractor. Within the broader group, the platform sits alongside digital infrastructure manager AiZAR Capital and early-stage venture unit Airnergize Ventures.
