Binance Labs, the investment arm of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has rebranded as YZi Labs to reflect its broadened investment focus. The change marks a pivotal moment for the organization as it shifts beyond its crypto roots to explore opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, and other transformative industries.

The rebranding also coincides with Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao’s (CZ) departure from the company’s day-to-day operations, a move described by YZi Labs as a “natural progression.” Despite stepping back from his role at Binance, Zhao will remain closely involved in YZi Labs’ activities, particularly by mentoring founders and providing strategic insights. This involvement underscores his commitment to fostering innovation and supporting emerging entrepreneurs in navigating today’s complex business landscape.

Ella Zhang, who co-founded Binance Labs with Zhao in 2018, has returned as the Head of YZi Labs. Under her leadership, the organization supported more than 40 startups during its initial years, including prominent Web3 and blockchain projects such as Polygon, Injective Protocol, and Dune Analytics. Her return signals a renewed focus on empowering entrepreneurs across a more diverse range of industries.

“I’m excited to rejoin YZi Labs at this pivotal moment and reconnect with our founders and community,” Zhang said. “While the rebranding marks the start of a new chapter, our mission remains unchanged: to empower visionary founders who are building for the long term with strong execution. By venturing into new horizons in AI and biotech, while staying rooted in our Web3 foundations, we aim to push the boundaries of innovation and create lasting value for society.”

The pivot to biotech and AI reflects broader trends within the venture capital ecosystem, as investors increasingly seek opportunities in industries with transformative societal potential. AI, in particular, has drawn significant interest for its role in reshaping sectors such as healthcare, logistics, and finance, while biotechnology offers groundbreaking possibilities in personalized medicine and drug development.

Despite its expanded vision, YZi Labs maintains its commitment to Web3 innovation. The organization plans to continue investing in blockchain projects with the potential to deliver long-term value, signaling that its roots in crypto remain an integral part of its identity.

“Rebranding to YZi Labs is more than a name change — it signifies an expanded vision as we broaden our horizons to include transformative sectors like AI and biotech,” Zhao said. “We’re thrilled to welcome Ella back to lead this next phase. Her expertise and vision were instrumental in shaping the organization’s early success, and I’m confident that under her leadership, YZi Labs will continue to thrive.”

As part of its rebranding, YZi Labs is revamping its flagship Incubation Programme. The new iteration will reintroduce in-person experiences through a 12-week residency designed to foster collaboration among startup founders. The programme aims to provide a hands-on environment where entrepreneurs can refine their ideas, access mentorship, and network with industry leaders.

The return to in-person incubation signals a commitment to deepening relationships with founders and creating a community-driven approach to innovation. The initiative will focus on startups operating at the intersection of Web3, AI, and biotechnology, further reinforcing YZi Labs’ multidisciplinary ambitions.

YZi Labs’ rebranding comes at a time when the investment landscape is undergoing significant change. With geopolitical uncertainties, evolving regulations, and rapid technological advancements, venture capital firms are adapting to meet new challenges. By diversifying its focus, YZi Labs aims to position itself as a leader in supporting groundbreaking ideas that transcend traditional industry boundaries.

In the year ahead, the organization plans to deepen its investments in AI and biotech while remaining a stalwart supporter of crypto and Web3 innovation. For founders, the message is clear: YZi Labs is committed to championing visionary ideas, offering not only capital but also mentorship and a collaborative ecosystem to help bring transformative projects to life.

With a legacy rooted in Web3 and an eye toward the future, YZi Labs is poised to shape the next generation of startups in some of the world’s most promising industries.
